MLB ROUNDUP \ Tuesday’s other games
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Rays 3, Blue Jays 1
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Pat Burrell hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning to give Tampa Bay the victor. The AL champions stopped a four-game losing streak that included three losses to rookie pitchers.
Red Sox 5, Athletics 2
BOSTON — Josh Beckett became Boston’s second 10-game winner and fellow All-Star Jason Bay hit his 20th homer. Beckett (10-3) matched the win total of another Boston all-star, Tim Wakefield, and remained unbeaten at home this season with five wins in eight starts. Bay, the top vote-getter among AL outfielders for next Tuesday’s game, hit a solo shot in the second inning, his first homer in 49 at-bats since hitting one June 23 at Washington.
Tigers 8, Royals 5
DETROIT — Marcus Thames hit a three-run homer to back Justin Verlander, who struck out 11 to run his AL-best total to 141, the most by a Detroit pitcher before the All-Star game in 37 years. Verlander (9-4) gave up five runs and seven hits over six innings. Miguel Cabrera and Placido Polanco also homered for the AL Central-leading Tigers.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Braves 2, Cubs 1
CHICAGO — Javier Vazquez allowed a run and five hits in seven strong innings and Brian McCann had two two-out RBIs for Atlanta. Vazquez (6-7), backed by some fine infield play from shortstop Yunel Escobar and second baseman Brooks Conrad, outpitched Carlos Zambrano. In his last nine starts, Vazquez has two wins — both against the Cubs. He walked none and struck out six.
Dodgers 8, Mets 0
NEW YORK — Fans at Citi Field booed the free-falling New York Mets even more loudly than they jeered Manny Ramirez — before he got ejected. Ramirez drove in three runs with two singles, then was ejected following his second called strikeout, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat what’s left of the Mets. Clayton Kershaw (6-5) combined with three relievers on a four-hitter, pinch-hitter Blake DeWitt hit a seventh-inning homer off the front of the second deck in left field and Los Angeles twice scored with bases-loaded walks.
Cardinals 5, Brewers 0
MILWAUKEE — Adam Wainwright came within two outs of his first career shutout and Ryan Ludwick and Colby Rasmus homered for St. Louis. The 27-year-old right-hander settled down after working out of bases-loaded jam in the second and didn’t allow a hit after the fourth inning until Casey McGehee’s infield hit leading off the ninth. Wainwright (9-5) allowed seven hits, struck out nine and walked two.
Reds 4, Phillies 3
PHILADELPHIA — Cincinnati’s Ramon Hernandez hit a tiebreaking RBI single off Brad Lidge in the ninth inning. Brandon Phillips hit a pair of homers and drove in three runs to help the Reds rebound from the worst loss in franchise history. Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth hit consecutive homers in the second for the NL East-leading Phillies, who had won four straight. David Weathers (1-1) tossed a scoreless eighth, pitching out of trouble. All-Star closer Francisco Cordero finished for his 21st save in 22 chances.
