Fire at McDonald’s

AUSTINTOWN — The Mahoning Avenue McDonald’s restaurant was closed Sunday for a few business hours because of a fire.

Township firefighters responded to a small kitchen fire at 5524 Mahoning Ave. Sunday morning. Reports said the fire started in the frying area of the restaurant and was extinguished by the machine’s hood suppression system.

Authorities believe the cause to be a grease buildup near the machine. No damage was reported.

Electrical fire at motel

AUSTINTOWN — An electrical fire caused about $10,000 worth of damage to the Econo Lodge Motel.

Township firefighters responded to a call at 5431 Seventy-Six Drive about 11:30 p.m. Sunday. The fire was controlled about 30 minutes later. According to a report, the fire started in the attic space of one of the units. Electrical wiring is believed to be the cause. The room was vacant at the time.

Woman raped in Hubbard

HUBBARD — Two masked men forced their way into a 30-year-old woman’s home on Fox Street late Sunday. Police said the victim was stabbed and raped by one of the men. One man also struck the victim with a gun and demanded to know where she kept her valuables.

A neighbor called police about 11:51 p.m. The victim was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, where she was treated.

Firearms charges

GIRARD — Dawn L. Greathouse, 38, of the 200 block of Smithsonian Street, was charged with improperly handling firearms, using a weapon while intoxicated and carrying a concealed weapon after a witness called police about 12:56 a.m. Sunday and told them that a woman was firing a handgun. Police found 12 shell casings in the area.

After she told police she had put the gun in her residence, a search yielded the handgun.

Elderly man injured

GIRARD — After being called to the 100 block of Hazel Street, police found an 84-year-old man bleeding profusely from a 2-inch gash above his left eye and neighbors attending to him. Karen Rogers-Sharp, 50, was charged with felonious assault and taken to Trumbull County jail.

Police said the victim, along with a female companion, arrived at Rogers-Sharp’s home on Hazel to take her to the store. She began arguing with the victim, then grabbed the car keys out of the ignition, exited the car, and threw the keys in a nearby swimming pool. The victim exited the car, and Rogers-Sharp grabbed him and pushed him to the ground, where he hit his head and broke his glasses and watch, police said.

One arrested, one sought after car chase

POLAND — Township police arrested one man and are looking for another in connection with a car chase that ended with one man jumping from a moving Ford Ranger.

Ronald Douglas Bier, 30, of Youngstown, was charged Friday with felony counts of drug possession and obstructing official business and misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest, failure to comply with a patrol officer’s order and possession of drug paraphernalia. A warrant was issued for Michael E. Easton, 25, of Youngstown, for a felony count of obstructing official business and misdemeanor counts of failure to comply with a patrol officer’s signal and possession of an open liquor container in a vehicle.

Police arrested Bier when he jumped from the vehicle they were pursuing. Easton, treated for injuries at St. Elizabeth Health Center, is at large after being released from the hospital.
