Community Day activities announced by committee


BESSEMER, Pa. — The Bessemer Community Days committee is inviting the public to revisit the ’50s during its Sock Hop Festival scheduled for two days at Old Glory Square and at the fire hall, located at 5 Main St.

Activities will begin July 24 with a picnic buffet from 5 to 7 p.m. Hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, baked beans, desserts and beverage will be available. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for children 4 to 12 and free for those 3 and under, and must be purchased in advance by calling (724)-667-7061. Ice cream treats will be available at a soda fountain, and the Dorals will entertain with dance contests for all ages from 7 to 10 p.m.

A parade is planned for 11 a.m. July 25 starting at Herman’s Garage and ending at Old Glory Square. There will be prizes for the best floats. During the day there will be a wide variety of activities including music, a cash raffle and Chinese auction, food vendors, crafters, games, a book sale, performances and contests.

All-day 3-on-3 basketball tournaments will be at Martin-Pumphouse Park, and a car and bike show with a cash award for Best of Show will be from noon to 4 p.m. at Kennedy Park.

Those attending the festival are reminded to take a lawn chair and are asked to donate a pair of socks for the needy.
