Rondinelli, 1080 capture victories
STRUTHERS — D.J. Simoncic tossed a two-hitter to lead Rondinelli Tuxedo to a 5-1 victory over Astro Falcons Sunday in their Class B playoffs series at Cene Park.
Simoncic allowed one earned run, walked four and struck out nine as Rondinelli grabbed a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.
Jason Bagoly homered and doubled, and scored twice. Jake Double had two hits including a triple. He scored twice and drove in a run. Phil LiPari added two hits and drove in a run.
Kolin Stanley picked up the loss for Astro, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits while striking out two. Shane Wagner had a hit and scored the Astro run. Tyler Royer had the other hit.
1080 Media 16, Wharmby Sports
STRUTHERS — Justin Summers led the 1080 Media’s offense with three hits. He drove in three runs and scored three.
Mitch Elliott, Brad Byers and Evan Campbell each had two hits. Elliott and Campbell each doubled, with Elliott driving in two and scoring twice. Campbell scored twice and drove in a run.
Byers scored three times while Anthony Raschilla drove in two runs. Chris Morgan picked up the win, pitching four innings in the five-inning game.
Josh Foster took the loss for Wharmby. Ben Bechtol had a hit and scored Wharmby’s run while Evan Anzio also had a hit.
Game two will be played today at 6 p.m. on Cene 1.
Class Little b
Astro Falcons 2, 1080 Media 0
STRUTHERS — Ryan Gallagher pitched a complete game shutout, scattering six hits and striking out seven.
Sutton Whiting led the Astro offense with two hits and he scored a run. Tim Audia scored the other run while John Beatty had the lone RBI.
Mike Watson went the distance for 1080, allowing two unearned runs.
Game two of the best-of-three series will be contested tonight at 8 on Cene 2.
Roth Brothers 3, Youngstown Express 1
STRUTHERS — Kyle Richael picked up the win for Roth, throwing a complete game. He allowed one run on two hits, striking out 10.
Dan Mioni led the Roth offense with two hits while Nick Reinthaler and Danny Watkins each contributed a hit and RBI.
John Fithian picked up the loss, allowing three runs, two of which were earned, on five hits.
Mark Calautti had a hit and scored the Express run. Fithian had the other hit.
Game two will be played today at 6 p.m. on Cene 2.
Tri-State Collegiate
YOUNGSTOWN — Ross Revella, Mike Hoelzel and Mike Popio singled and scored but it wasn’t enough as Youngstown Metros lost to Pittsburgh Pandas, 4-3, at Pemberton Park. Eric Pirtz also had a RBI single for Metros.
In a second game, the Metros rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Pandas. Pirtz scored three runs while Matt Pitzulo doubled. Also singling and scoring were Cory Johnson and Matt Durkin.
