Second suspect in custody in toddler’s death

CANTON — A second suspect is in custody in the fatal shooting of a 2-year-old girl in her Canton home.

Police say 20-year-old Maki G. Ragland was arrested at his mother’s home in Canton on Saturday.

Police say Ragland and another man, William H. Ferguson, both of Canton, entered the girl’s home Thursday night and demanded money. The toddler, Harmoney Sankey, was shot and killed, and her grandfather was assaulted and shot in the leg.

Both men face charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated murder.

Ragland and Ferguson, who is 21, remained jailed Saturday night, each in lieu of $5 million bond. It wasn’t immediately clear whether they had attorneys.

Stark County Court records show Ragland had been found innocent June 24 of shooting two men in a January robbery.

Art-therapy practitioners seek state recognition

CINCINNATI — Art therapists, who use painting and sculpting to help patients deal with emotional and behavioral issues, want more states to set licensing standards to protect the public from scams and make it easier to get reimbursed by insurance companies.

A lawmaker in Ohio has introduced a bill that would establish minimum standards for training and mandate that any practitioner be licensed, much like a family therapist, marriage counselor or barber.

Only New Mexico, Mississippi and Kentucky — where legislation was signed in April — license art therapists, according to the American Art Therapy Association. The Maryland Art Therapy Association is seeking state regulation in that state.

Fatal fireworks accident

QUAKERTOWN — Police in eastern Pennsylvania say a 19-year-old employee of the fireworks company staging a July Fourth celebration in Quakertown was killed by an explosion at the beginning of the grand finale of the event.

Corporal Scott Fogel says one of the fireworks misfired about 9:45 p.m. Saturday at Quakertown’s Memorial Park, and debris struck the 19-year-old man in the neck and chest. Firefighters gave the man first aid, but he was pronounced dead at St. Luke’s Hospital-Quakertown.

Police Chief Scott McElree says authorities immediately stopped the show and evacuated part of the park.
