Mill Creek to host sand-sculpture contest

STAFF REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN — Mill Creek MetroParks’ annual sand-sculpture contest will be from 1 to 4 p.m. July 26, with prizes ranging from $5 to $100.

The contest is part of the Sunfest, the annual celebration of summer at Judge Morley Pavilion. Sunfest takes place from 9 a.m.-dark, with various fun activities for all ages.

Sculptures will be judged on creativity in themes as well as sculpting technique at this family-friendly challenge. Sand, hoses and water will be provided by the MetroParks, but participants must supply their own shovels, trowels, brooms, brushes, etc., and accessories such as paint or decorative objects. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at 4:30 p.m.

A registration fee of $5 guarantees a one-ton pile of sand to individuals or to sculpting teams. Participants age 13 and older can compete in the Sand Crab division, and children age 12 or younger sculpting alone or with other children may compete in the Sand Flea division.

Call (330) 740-7107 to register or to obtain contest details.

Other Sunfest activities include a closest-to-the-pin golf tournament from 9 a.m. to noon (entry fee required), a free one-mile hike with a naturalist from 11 a.m. to noon; and a free lawn concert starting at 5:30 p.m. featuring ’60s band Aftermath to bring the day’s festivities to a relaxing close.
