Wharmby wins Class B playoff


STRUTHERS — Wharmby Sports broke open a 2-1 contest with three runs in the fifth inning and went on to eliminate Dave Sugar Excavating from the Class Big B playoffs with a 7-1 victory on Friday night at Cene Park.

Jason Burkes had three hits, including a pair of doubles while Tony Koch, and Jim Dobran added two hits for Whamby. Koch started the fifth when he beat out a infield chopper for a single. After a sacrifice by Josh Foster a single by Anthony Savko scored Koch. Dobran followed with a hit and Burkes’ double scored the second run of the rally. The final run scored on a hit by Dom DeFelice.

Josh Saverko went the first five innings for the win, striking out three. Chris Miller pitched the final two frames, allowing one hit.

Joey Borrelli had two hits for Dave Sugar.

Wharmby will face 1080 Media in the second round starting Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

STRUTHERS — Tyler Kernen tossed a one hitter as 1080 Media defeated Action Physical Therapy 6-1.

Kernen also had a pair of RBIs while Jon Midgley had two doubles and a single, and Mike Lopuchovsky a single and a double for the winners.

Brad Kelly went the distance in defeat for Action Physical Therapy while a first inning RBI triple by Zac Palumbo was the only hit of the game for Action.

Ohio Glaciers

The Ohio Glaciers 18U travel team finished 4-1 at the 24-team Black Swamp Classic in Bowling Green. The Glaciers defeated the Michigan Bulls, Cincinnati Flames, Whitehouse Legion and Indy Pony Express before falling to Lake Erie Baseball. The team was led offensively by Nick Dinello, Jake Kucek, Sean Gabriel, Austin Erb and Brett Cooper. Pitching and defense was provided by Pat O’Brien, Todd Kibby, Shane Parks and Kevin McCulloh. The Glaciers are 18-5 this season.
