St. Nicholas youth group plans mission trip

STRUTHERS — The youth group at St. Nicholas Church, 764 Fifth St., along with the Diocese of Youngstown, Catholic Charities and Habitat for Humanity, will help with the Hurricane Katrina 2009 reconstruction season in New Orleans.

The objective of the ministry is to restore a family to home ownership after three years in public housing because of the storm damage. The group will assist a single mother and her two teenage daughters. The property is in suburban New Orleans and took in 7 Ω feet of water.

About 25 volunteers from St. Nicholas are working to raise enough money to be a part of this mission. The group will leave July 12 and return July 18. The goal is raise about $10,000 for the trip. The young people, their parents and others have sponsored community fundraisers.

An ongoing fundraiser is the sale of a special seven-day candle. The candles, which are being sold at St. Nicholas, cost $10. Monetary contributions also are being accepted.

Also, aluminum cans are being collected and can be donated by dropping them off at the garage at the parish center, 766 Fifth St.
