Churches collect items

HUBBARD — Six churches in Hubbard sponsored a vacation Bible school at Grace Lutheran Church and participants collected toys, videos, books and other appropriate items for patients at Akron Children’s Hospital of the Mahoning Valley.

Sponsoring churches were Central Christian Church, First Baptist Church, First Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church and St. Patrick’s Church.

Pastor Jim Zingale of Grace Lutheran challenged the youngsters to take on the collection. He is a volunteer chaplain at the hospital and had become aware of the need.

About 120 students and 50 volunteers met the challenge and went beyond expectations, collecting ore than 800 items.

The children also raised $300 to support the work at the Navajo Lutheran Mission School in Rock Point, Ariz.

New location

YOUNGSTOWN — Church of the Living Word is at its new location, 3300 Hudson Ave.

Worship is planned at 11 a.m. Sunday with Pastor J.L. Sanford.

Diocesan guild

STRUTHERS — The diocesan Infant Jesus of Prague Guild will meet July 15 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 250 N. Bridge St. The rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. and Mass at 10.

Wick Neighbors service

YOUNGSTOWN — Monsignor Robert Siffrin will deliver the sermon, “Sent Forth in the Good News,” at the annual Wick Neighbors Community Worship Service at 10 a.m. July 12 at First Presbyterian Church, Wick and Wood streets.

The worship is in conjunction with Youngstown State University’s arts festival.

He is vicar general of the Diocese of Youngstown and administrator of St. Edward Church. He has been a priest for 30 years.

Leading worship will be the Rev. Nick Mager, pastor; Dr. Victor Wan-Tatah, associate; and Beth Burnette, member, all of First Presbyterian.

Also participating will be Sister Isabelle Rudge of St. Columba; Nate Reynolds of Butler Presbyterian Church; the Rev. Erv Smuda and Meg Silver, both of St. John’s Episcopal Church; Dr. David Sweet of Youngstown State University and Margaret Murphy, director of Wick Neighbors.

Prayer breakfast

YOUNGSTOWN — Jerusalem Baptist Church, 2003 Wilson Ave., will hold a prayer breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. July 11 with the theme, “Tested and Proven.” Pastor Sylvia Jennings will speak.

The cost is $8 for those 12 and older and $4 for those 11 and younger.

Family festival

CANTON — The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown’s Human Life Guild will sponsor a Faith and Family Festival from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 25 on the grounds of the Sancta Clara Monastery at Market Ave. and 44th Street.

Singer/songwriter Tony Melendez will present a concert beginning at 10:30 a.m. The day will includes music, lessons for children and teens, speakers for adults, the family rosary, Eucharistic adoration, Mass, lunch and more.

Advance registration is $20 per person or $35 per family.

Sermon series

HERMITAGE, Pa. — Pastor David Williamson of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 159 Todd Ave., will offer a series of sermons in honor of the 500th birthday of John Calvin, Protestant reformer.

He will follow Calvin’s example and preach a book of the Bible from cover to cover during the summer.

“How to Really Trust in God” is a practical look at what it means to be a Christian, based on the New Testament letter of James.

The first sermon in the series, “Count It All Joy,” will be this Sunday. A luncheon will follow.
