New league will consider signing Vick

NEW YORK — When the United Football League debuts in October, Michael Vick could be one of its players.

Michael Huyghue, the commissioner of the new four-team league, says the UFL is willing to give Vick a place to play — provided there are no pending legal issues. His rights belong to the Orlando franchise.

“One of the things that is important in our premiere season is to showcase the quality of talent and the coaches, and to be able to show outstanding players who find themselves in this quagmire the NFL creates,” Huyghue said. “Michael Vick might be that kind of player.”

Cherundolo returns for US in Gold Cup

SEATTLE — Leave it to the most experienced international veteran on the U.S. Gold Cup roster to give this tournament perspective.

U.S right back Steve Cherundolo has been hurt since November. He had hip surgery in April. The 30-year-old defender was home last month while the Americans shocked top-ranked Spain in the Confederations Cup in South Africa, then led Brazil by two goals before losing 3-2 in Sunday’s final.

So for Cherundolo, getting back his starting job by playing in the CONCACAF Gold Cup is as big as playing Spain or Brazil last week would have been. Right?

Uh, no.

“Our goal is obviously to win the tournament. Anyone who doesn’t have that goal shouldn’t be here,” said Cherundolo, who has 51 appearances with U.S.

Silver Stars prevail

SAN ANTONIO — Sophia Young had 19 points and eight rebounds in leading the San Antonio Silver Stars to an 85-72 win over the Chicago Sky in the WNBA on Friday night.

Becky Hammon added 14 points with 10 assists as San Antonio (4-4) moved back to .500 after losing its first home game on Tuesday to Washington on a last-second bucket.

Vickie Johnson had 15, Ruth Riley 14, and Edwidge Lawson-Wade 12 as the five double-digit scorers combined for 74 of the Silver Stars’ points.

Dream on top

ATLANTA — Chamique Holdsclaw scored 18 points, and Sancho Lyttle added 16, helping the Dream snap a two-game WNBA losing streak.

Alana Beard had 16 points for Washington, which has dropped three of four and missed its first nine 3-point attempts before Matee Ajavon hit two straight in the final 2 minutes. The Mystics began the game with the WNBA’s third-best percentage beyond the arc at 39.4.

The Dream, who had lost four of five, forced Washington into 28 turnovers, a season high for the Mystics that resulted in 23 points.

Atlanta is 5-6 this season.
