Astro wins 6-2, sweeps OTN in ‘B’ playoffs
STRUTHERS — Trent Vallinger tossed a one hitter with nine strikeouts as the Astro Falcons defeated OTN Performance 6-2 to sweep their Class B playoff first round playoff series 2-0 on Thursday at Cene Park.
Vallinger allowed only a one out single to LJ Schromofsky. Vallinger also walked seven and allowed two unearned runs while Shane Wagner and Philip Woods had a pair of hits for the winners.
Shaun Roman went the first three innings and suffered the loss.
Astro will face Rondinelli Tuxedo in the best-of-3 second round of the playoffs.
Dave Sugar Excavating 4, Wharmby Sports 2
STRUTHERS — Dave Sugar rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the first-round series at one game each.
Game three will be today at 7 p.m.
Jordan Izzo drove home the tying and go ahead runs with his second hit of the game in the fifth. Izzo had three RBIs while Nick Benson and Travis Richey added two hits each for Dave Sugar.
Nick Crum went the first six innings for the win. He allowed just one earned run with two strikeouts. Richey tossed a perfect seventh inning for the save.
Players of the week
Dan Popio and Nick Crum were named Class B League co-players of the week.
Popio, playing for 1080 Media, compiled a .529 batting average, going 9-for-17 with two doubles, eight runs scored, eight walks and six RBIs. For the season Popio has posted a .500 batting average, with 38 hits, 24 RBIs, 25 runs scored, and a .573 on-base percentage.
Crum, who plays for Dave Sugar Excavating, threw 101‚Ñ3 innings in three appearances, giving up no earned runs. He chalked up a 1-0 record while striking out four and walking four. On the season, Crum has pitched 182‚Ñ3 innings with eight strikeouts and eight walks.
Little b playoffs
Thursday’s games were postponed until today.
Action Physical Therapy will play 1080 Media at 6 p.m., followed by Rondinelli Tuxedo against Youngstown Express. Both games will be played on Cene 2.
