Allman a bright spot for Scrappers
The undrafted free agent hit a solo home run in Mahoning Valley’s 2-1 loss to the Williamsport Crosscutters on Wednesday.

NILES — After a lousy night, and a forgettable game, Scrappers fans may be looking for a good story.
Enter John Allman.
After a stellar career at Kansas, Allman’s phone sat silent on draft day last year but wasn’t ready to give up on his baseball dream.
So he signed a free agent deal last June with the Indians and, through hustle and hard work, basically forced the team to keep him.
“He’s been great for us; he’s been great for our organization,” said Scrappers manager Travis Fryman following Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to the Williamsport Crosscutters on a chilly, soggy night at Eastwood Field. “He was a non-drafted free agent and he just wanted somebody to let him come to spring training and play, so we did.
“And he played so well, and played so hard, the staff fell in love with him.”
Allman, an outfielder, started the year at Class-A Kinston, where he batted .273 in 19 games. He then played 20 games for Lake County (batting .190 with three homers) before finding his way to Mahoning Valley.
He’s made himself at home so far, batting .347 in 13 games and hitting his first homer, an opposite-field laser that landed in the right field bullpen, on Wednesday night.
“I don’t try to hit balls out that way,” said Allman, who is originally from St. Louis. “I just got a ball up in the zone and I was able to drive it.”
Allman entered the game batting .455 in his first six games at Eastwood Field.
“It’s still early in the year and we’ve played a lot of games at home,” he said. “Hopefully we can keep this winning thing going and keep swinging the bats well.”
Allman won’t be mistaken for a power hitter — he had just 17 home runs in more than 700 NCAA at-bats — but he never hit under .333 at Kansas and has made the most of his talent.
“He’s played well everywhere we’ve asked him to play this year,” said Fryman. “My guess is he won’t be here all year long.
“He’s done so well at every level, he’s bounced around the field and he’s been a role player for us. He brings so much to our club and I’m happy to have him as long as I can.”
While Allman is happy with his start, he said he’s not focused on getting called up.
“That’s out of my control,” he said. “I’m just taking it day-by-day.
“I’m happy to be here. I’m just going to keep playing hard.”
Brett Brach started and gave up one run over five innings for the Scrappers (8-5), while Austin Adams (0-1) got the loss after surrendering a solo homer in three innings. Nick Kirk tossed a scoreless ninth.
“The pitching was great,” said Fryman. “We just couldn’t get any runs. That’s sort of been our issue the last week or so.”
Chun Chen had two hits, including a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth. But the Scrappers couldn’t get a sacrifice bunt down and Chen was eventually stranded at third to end the game.
“We just didn’t string hits together,” Fryman said.
Adam Buschini homered and Jeremy Barnes went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead Williamsport (8-5), which has won two straight.
Matt Way (one run over four innings), Ebelin Lugo (two scoreless innings to improve to 2-0) and Austin Hyatt (three scoreless innings for his second save) combined on a six-hitter for the Crosscutters.
