South Side fire leaves family homeless

YOUNGSTOWN — A mother, her four children and her nephew were left out in the cold after their home in the 2700 block of Idlewood Avenue on the city’s South Side caught fire around 9 a.m. Thursday.

No one was injured, but the loss of property and contents was estimated at $6,000.

Officials said the unintentional fire started in the kitchen and the spread up an interior wall to the second floor and attic.

“It appears that something either fell off the stove top to ignite the trash on the floor or perhaps one of the children may have been involved,” according to the fire report.

Firefighters cleared the scene after 90 minutes, and the Red Cross was called to provide accommodations for the family.
