Lottery numbers add up to $ for two from Valley

YOUNGSTOWN — Two Valley residents are seeing green despite the winter whiteouts. Timothy Wires of Cortland and Christina VonGuten of Girard were winners in games from state lotteries earlier this week.

Wires won $10,000 on Mega Millions for matching four numbers and the Mega ball in the Jan. 23 drawing. He purchased his ticket from Sheetz on Elm Road in Warren. VonGuten won $100,000 on the Kicker number of her Jan. 23 ticket. Her ticket was purchased from Uni-Mart in Niles.

They were required to pay 31 percent of their earnings in state and federal taxes. After the deductions, Wires took home $6,900 and VonGuten pocketed $69,000.

This meeting replaces the Wednesday session that was canceled because of the weather.

Clear those hydrants

BOARDMAN — The township fire department is asking residents and businesses to clear the snow from around the fire hydrants on their property. The height of the snow is making it difficult for fire crews to find hydrants during an emergency.

For more information, contact Lt. William R. Glaser at the department’s Bureau of Fire Prevention and Education at (330) 729-9535.

E-mail controversy

COLUMBIANA — Police want to put an end to an Internet story claiming that an elderly woman was threatened recently by two men in the parking lot of a city store.

The e-mail contends the two men were banging on her car and screaming and were “totally evil.”

Detective John Jay said Thursday that the story has been “going around for a month or six weeks.”

He added that the tale has taken on a life of its own.

The department was alerted to the story by another police department. Jay said he did not try to trace the e-mail account. “We want to nip it in the bud,” he said.

Warren parking ban

WARREN — City officials remind residents that the parking ban is still in effect and to make sure cars are off the streets so snowplows can clear them.

Also, William D. Franklin, safety-service director, says residents are responsible for keeping the sidewalks in front of their homes clear of snow.

He added it would be appreciated if neighbors clear the sidewalks of the homes of those who are elderly or disabled.
