Governor to discuss education plan here Monday

Gov. Ted Strickland is scheduled to tour Lloyd Elementary School in Youngstown Monday, and is expected to speak publicly about his Education Reform and Funding Plan, presented Wednesday during his State of the State address.

The plan includes longer school days and years, mandatory all-day kindergarten, elimination of Ohio's graduation test but the addition of classes on global and cultural awareness, life skills, media literacy, leadership and productivity, and a requirement for community service.

Teachers will be required to complete more training before attaining a teaching license, will have to provide mentoring and coaching and will be subject to peer review, and possible dismissal, if their students are not learning.
