YOUNGSTOWN — Are the kids tired of being cooped up in the house because of the weather? Get 'em out this Saturday for some midwinter fun at Youngstown State University.

The second annual Kid’s Fun Day, presented by Panera Bread, begins at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Stambaugh Stadium. The three-hour event, hosted by YSU’s athletic department, is free ... and indoors. It's located in the gigantic gymnasium inside the stadium.

It will precede the YSU basketball doubleheader at Beeghly Center. The YSU women will host Loyola in a 4:35 p.m. tip-off, followed by the men against Detroit in a Horizon League game.

Kid’s Tailgate Fun Day is free and open to children and adults of all ages. Activities will include bounce-a-round games, giant inflatables, basketball and other skill games, clowns, face painting, Pete and Penny (the YSU Penguins mascots) and ticket and promotional giveaways. Athletes from YSU's 18 intercollegiate teams will man games of skill and give away prizes to the winners.

"It's an opportunity to blow off some steam in a free event," said Rick Love, associate director of athletics at YSU. The first basketball Fun Day last year was a success. There were about 1,000 kids and 500 parents in the gym at all times, said Love, and the basketball game drew a season-high 6,100 fans.

In addition, YSU will host its annual Rummage Sale at Beeghly Center during the two basketball games. Fans will be able to purchase game-worn uniforms, warm-ups and other authentic Penguin gear. The sale will include football jerseys, basketball uniforms, baseball uniforms and other YSU memorabilia. The gates will open at 3:30 p.m. for the rummage sale and games.

The first 2,500 fans attending the game will receive a Pete and Penny coloring and activity book, courtesy of myvalleysports.com, Armstrong Cable and Cortland Banks. The book features puzzles, word find puzzles and YSU fun facts for the young Penguin fan.

The basketball doubleheader is also a “Penguins for Kids” special event supported by the DeBartolo Corp. Area school and youth group leaders can contact the YSU athletic marketing office at (330) 941-7227 for free game tickets.

Tickets for the five remaining home games are available through the ticket office during business hours or by calling (330) 941-1YSU. For more information, go to YSUsports.com for gameday promotions and individual game information.
