GM, UAW kill the jobs bank, effective Monday.

Workers being laid off from the Lordstown car plant are losing their long-term safety net.

General Motors said today that it has reached an agreement with the United Auto Workers to eliminate the jobs bank, effective Monday.

The deal is part of ongoing negotiations to help GM meet conditions set by the federal government to receive loans, said Tony Sapienza, a company spokesman.

The jobs bank was a program that paid workers once their jobs were eliminated. It kicked in after unemployment benefits expired, which typically last for 48 weeks.
