Richardson wins

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — Youngstown’s Durrell Richardson took a six-round unanimous decision from David Thomas in a light middleweight bout at the Cambria War Memorial Arena.

Thunder has tryouts

NILES — The Mahoning Valley Thunder will hold an open tryout at the Mayor Ralph A. Infante Wellness Center on Feb. 13 from noon-4 p.m.

Dressler is honored

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Presidents’ Athletic Conference named Westminster College junior swimmer Emily Dressler as the PAC Women’s Swimmer/Diver of the Week.

Dressler broke an 18-year-old record with a time of 5:10.30 in the 500-yard freestyle.

She beat Maureen Deagen’s mark of 5:10.31 set at the 1991 the NAIA national meet.

Miller recognized

WEXFORD, Pa. — Rob Miller, a sophomore on the Thiel College wrestling team from Reynolds High, was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week.

Miller had four wins in the 125-pound class to lead the Tomcats to a sweep of the Mel Berry Duals.

Miller is 19-3.

Bodrick selected

WEXFORD, Pa. — Amber Bodrick, a senior on the Thiel College women’s basketball team from Cardinal Mooney High, was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.

Bodrick averaged 22.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in Thiel’s wins over Grove City (54-44) and Waynesburg (57-56) last week.

She collected 23 points and seven rebounds against Grove City, then had 21 points and nine rebounds against Waynesburg.

Cheliras snaps mark

COLUMBUS — Gina Cheliras, a freshman on the Ohio State rifle team from Hubbard High, broke her own school smallbore record Sunday.

Cheliras placed first in the smallbore competition with a school-record 594 score, as the Buckeyes defeated Rose Hulman, 4,628-4,373.

Cheliras’s previous school record was 591 set earlier this season against Akron.

The Buckeyes (8-4) won both the smallbore rifle (2,297-2,168) and the air rifle (2,331-2,206).

Cheliras also had a 551 in air rifle for a overall two-event score of 1,145.

Widlicka is picked

VIENNA, W. Va. — Spencer Widlicka, a freshman goalkeeper for the Ohio Valley University soccer team from United High, has been selected to the All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team as an honorable mention.

Widlicka (6-2, 165), a sports management major, helped Ohio Valley to its most successful season (9-7-4) in its short 12-year history. He played in 16 games, starting 14 of them, and posted a 7-7-3 record (5-4-1 in the WVIAC) with a 1.33 goals-against average.

Widlicka led OVU to shutouts over Charleston and Seton Hill.

Vallinger qualifies

ADA — Mary Vallinger, a sophomore diver with the Mount Union College women’s swimming team from Poland High, qualified for the NCAA Div. III Swimming and Diving Championships Friday in an Ohio Athletic Conference dual meet at Ohio Northern University.

Vallinger, the reigning OAC Diver of the Year and defending OAC diving champion, scored 254.35 in 1-meter diving in the OAC meet to qualify automatically for the national meet slated March 12-14 at the Univ. of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Freshman sets record

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — German Fernandez will have a hard time topping the first indoor meet of his college career.

The Oklahoma State freshman ran the mile in 3 minutes, 56.50 seconds Saturday at the Razorback Invitational, the fastest time ever by a junior athlete.

“We just went out there to have fun,” Fernandez said. “That was my first indoor meet ever, so I really didn’t know what to expect.”

The IAAF doesn’t list an official world junior record, but the governing body said the fastest previous junior indoor mile was by Kenya’s Boaz Lalang, who ran it in 3:58.34.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — With 500 days to go until the World Cup, soccer’s governing body says more effort must be made to ensure that fans come to South Africa.

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said Monday he’s no longer worried about stadiums being ready on time. He is, however, concerned about filling the stadiums.
