COLUMBUS — Lt. Morris L. Hill Jr., originally from Warren, is the new assistant district commander at the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Bucyrus District Headquarters following his promotion to the rank of staff lieutenant.

Hill will transfer from the Bucyrus Post where he has served as post commander since November 2001. Hill lives in Mansfield with his wife, Angela, and their seven children.

SALEM — The Salem Historical Society is seeking nominations for its 2009 Citizens of Honor award.

The inaugural class of 24 citizens was installed in 2006 during the Bicentennial. Four more people were added in the last two years.

The criteria is for Salem-connected citizens past or present who have distinguished themselves with service to their community, their career, and/or their country.

CORTLAND — Orders will be taken until March 27 for the Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District’s annual pond stocking sale.

Bass, bluegill, catfish, perch, and minnows are available. White amurs (grass carp) are also available. White amurs are used for pond vegetation control and cost $13 each. Others cost between 6 cents and 85 cents each.

The fish will be ready for pick-up at the Mosquito Lake Parking area off of McCleary Jacoby Road and West Main Street (next to the cemetery) at 2:30 p.m. March 31.

The society intends to announce the addition of two more winners during the Founders’ Day program in April.

A person in any field can be considered for nomination, which includes community involvement and other activities. Suggestions can be made to the Citizens of Honor committee, 208 S. Broadway Ave. by Feb. 16. All nominations will be kept on file for present or future consideration.

WARREN — The Raymond J. Wean Foundation is offering orientation sessions for grant seekers on Feb. 4 from 10 to 11:15 a.m. at the Warren-Trumbull Public Library Howland Branch, 9095 E. Market St.; and Feb. 5 from 3 to 4:15 p.m. at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, 305 Wick Ave., Youngstown. YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Historical Center will have “Climbing My Family Tree,” an adult/child workshop, from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 14, at 151 W. Wood St.

This family heritage program begins the process of climbing your family tree. We encourage all participants to bring family photos, and other related items for inclusion in your complimentary family album/workbook.

Adult/child teams learn basic genealogy, discover research methods/sources and ways to “find” missing ancestors. The cost is $12 for one adult/child team who are OHS members and $15 for all other adult/child teams. Additional children per team are $5 for OHS members and $7 for nonmembers. LOWELLVILLE — Lowellville Schools was awarded a $10,000 grant from the CSX Corporate Giving Program to be used for school safety and security measures. The grant was presented to school officials by Thomas Palumbo, supervisor of locomotive engineers of the CSX Corp.’s New Castle Lakes Division, and Terry Ludman, CSX head of operations, Lifesaver and Safety. Palumbo is a 1965 graduate of Lowellville High School.
