The number of oil rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the United States dropped by 53 the week of Jan. 18-24 to 1,515. Of the rigs running nationwide, 1,185 were exploring for natural gas and 318 for oil. A year ago, the rig count stood at 1,747, Houston-based Baker Hughes said.
