Lou Blaney dies
HARTFORD — Lou Blaney, 69, a local racing legend and the father of NASCAR driver Dave Blaney, died Sunday of an undisclosed illness.
“I doubt there is anyone in Penn-Ohio racing history that has been more respected than Lou Blaney,” said racing historian and Tri-City Speedway track announcer Walt Wimer.
Prep indoor track
AKRON — Boardman High senior Corey Linsley set the Akron Univ. Fieldhouse record for high school shot put with a winning throw of 58 feet, 6 inches.
As a junior, Linsley finished runner-up in the state indoor championships and placed third in the event in the state meet last spring.
He has verbally committed to a football scholarship at Ohio State University.
Also, Caleb Matthews of Boardman won both the high jump and triple jump while placing second in the long jump and sixth in the high hurdles.
Howland basketball
HOWLAND — Tickets are on sale at the Howland High School Activities Office for two basketball games at the Chevrolet Centre this week.
Howland girls meet Canfield on Wednesday and the Tiger boys take on Beaver Local Friday. The office is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. until 3 p.m.

NILES — Tickets are now on sale at the Niles High School Athletic Office for an upcoming basketball game at the Chevrolet Centre.
The Niles boys meet Poland on Friday at 7:45 p.m.
The office is open daily, 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
More academic honors
WEXFORD, Pa. — Three Youngstown-area student athletes from Westminster College — Fred Romeo (Poland High), Lindsey Mellott (Lakeview) and Kevin Kapraly (Mohawk) — were named to the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll for the fall semester of 2008. Their names were omitted from Saturday’s story.
Romeo is a junior football player majoring in environmental science, while Mellott is a junior on the women’s soccer team majoring in biology. Kapraly is a sophomore soccer play with a major in history.
Last spring, Romeo, who also plays tennis, was named to the All-PAC Honor Roll for that sport.
Youth hockey
GARFIELD HEIGHTS — The Canfield High hockey team defeated Garfield Heights, 8-3, in a Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League Blue South Division game on Saturday night.
Riley Emery had four goals and two assists for the Cardinals (9-11, 3-4). Joe Geiser added two goals and Scott Sittig and Tyler Buchenic scored one apiece.
Nick Carney had three assists, Sittig had two and Geiser one. The win moved Canfield into a second-place tie in the league standings.
Also, the Mooney/Ursuline Thunder team dropped two games.
Friday M/U dropped a 7-6 decision to Akron Hoban. Brian Styers had two goals while Cory Timmings, Ryan Demyen, Josh Charleton and Dean Macklen each had one.
Alex Figuly, Phil Tate, Styers, Macklen, Charleton and Demyen had assists.
M/U (4-6) then lost to Lakewood, 8-3. Styers had two goals and Will Baringer the other.

Dekker arrested
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Former Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Jonathan Dekker was arrested early Saturday, charged with obstruction of justice.
Dekker was released on $1,000 bond, police said.
Dekker was waived injured in August by the team, which will play Arizona in the Super Bowl next Sunday. He injured his knee in the preseason.
Police said they responded to a complaint at 3:30 a.m. near Old Town Alexandria. When they arrived, Dekker tried to flee but was apprehended.
The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Dekker played three games for the Steelers in 2007. He was signed by the Steelers in 2006 as a free agent from Princeton and spent that season on the practice squad.

NEW YORK — One Step Ahead beat My Dinah by three-quarters of a length Sunday in the $46,000 allowance feature for fillies and mares at Aqueduct.
The 4-year-old trained by Bruce Levine and ridden by Rajiv Maragh earned a second straight win, improving to six for 12 overall. The time was 1:43.97 for the one mile, 70 yards in 1:43.97 on the fast track.
One Step Ahead paid $3.80, $3.10 and $2.10 as the 4-5 favorite. My Dinah returned $7.20 and $3.90. Bourbon Maid paid $2.50 to show.
Promoter dies
MADISON, Wis. — A promoter for the Motor Sports Monster Truck & Thrill Show has died from injuries after an accident at the Dane County Coliseum, just over a week after a 6-year-old boy was killed in a monster truck event in Tacoma, Wash.
The Dane County Coroner said 41-year-old George Eisenhart Jr. of Chardon, Ohio, died after an accident Saturday night in Madison. A witness told the Wisconsin State Journal that Eisenhart walked in front of one of the monster trucks just as it was about to pass by.
