Special Olympics project is all wrapped up

SALEM — More than 30 colorful scarves were made and have been donated to the Special Olympics by students and staff at St. Paul School, parishioners, and members of the Salem and Youngstown community.

Charlotte-based Coats & Clark sponsored the project to provide each athlete at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in February with a white and delft blue scarf, and Amy Goodchild, an art teacher at the school, initiated the project at the PreK-6 school, where response was overwhelming.

The scarves that were created locally were sent to the International Game Offices in Idaho.

The corporate goal for the project was 5,000 scarves. However, due to national media coverage, and interest in the Special Olympics, the project was wrapped up this past week with an estimated 35,000 scarves received at the headquarters.
