Portion of icy I-80 in Liberty, Hubbard closed after fatal crash, other wrecks

HUBBARD — A series of wrecks on black ice resulted in one fatality and the shutdown of a portion of Interstate 80 westbound and eastbound tonight.

The victim involved in the fatal crash had been traveling eastbound and wrecked near the Pennsylvania line, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. No further information about the fatality was available.

The first call came in at 6:34 p.m., police said. Initial reports included serious, possibly fatal, injuries.

A helicopter, several ambulances and tow trucks were called to the scene.

The black ice created hazardous road conditions by the truck scales near the Hubbard exit and the Liberty Township line, police said. The roadway is shut down in both directions between those exits.

There were three separate crashes, two on the eastbound lane and one on the westbound lane. One crash was a tractor-trailer rig that jack-knifed.
