Scholastic art awards are on exhibit at YSU

YOUNGSTOWN — The 2009 Regional Scholastic Art Awards is on exhibit now through Feb. 6 at the McDonough Museum of Art on the campus of Youngstown State University.

The Northeastern Ohio Regional Scholastic Art Awards program is part of the national exhibit sponsored by the educational publishers, Scholastic Inc., New York. The counties eligible to participate in this region are Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula.

Participating this year are 75 art educators from 60 participating schools with more than 500 works by approximately 475 area students showing their skills in painting, ceramics, drawing, graphic design, computer graphics, mixed media, photography, printmaking and sculpture.

Regional recipients will receive their awards at a private ceremony. Awards given include best of show, gold keys, silver keys and art scholarships. Those winners are the only regional works sent to New York to compete at the national level.

The Scholastic Art Awards program is administered nationally by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, Inc.

The McDonough Museum of Art is at 410 Wick Ave. Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The museum is open to the public, and admission is free.
