YOUNGSTOWN — A certificate of appreciation was presented Wednesday to the Youngstown Police Department Bomb Squad for “outstanding support during the 2008 Presidential Campaign.”

The plaque came from the Department of Homeland Security, Unites States Secret Service, Akron office.

Detective Sgt. Joe DeMatteo, squad commander, said there were 18 visits during the campaign by candidates and their surrogates.

For each event, the bomb squad did a sweep of the speaking location and stayed until the end. He said the squad also checked hotels and restaurants for candidates who stayed overnight.

Trumbull hospitals get grants for prescriptions

WARREN — Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital and St. Joseph Health Center both received $10,000 from the Trumbull County Community Foundation to help low-income patients pay for prescription medications.

The Humility of Mary Health Partners Development Foundation plans to match the $10,000 grant for its Prescription Assistance Program, said James P. Schultis, president of the HMHP Development Foundation. St. Joseph is an HMHP hospital.

Donation to food bank

YOUNGSTOWN — First Place Bank has given $2,500 to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.

The gift will enable the food bank to distribute some $37,500 worth of food to hungry families in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties, said Michael Iberis, Second Harvest executive director.

TMH to have open house for mammography suite

WARREN — Trumbull Memorial Hospital, with financial support from the TMH Woman’s Auxiliary and the TMH Foundation, opens a new mammography suite with an open house from 3 to 6 p.m. today.

The new facility features digital mammography and breast MRI technology purchased with contributions totaling $600,000 from the auxiliary and foundation.

The digital machines offer earlier detection breast cancer, emit less radiation, result in faster examinations and reduce the need for repeat imaging.

Images can be stored and shared digitally, and the new technology provides the largest field of view available, hospital officials said.

Police investigate attempted robbery

SALEM — Police are investigating an attempted armed robbery of Cheap Tobacco, 200 E. Second St. at 5:57 p.m. Tuesday.

The would-be robber entered the store, put what appeared to be a gun on the counter, and demanded money.

A clerk did not hand over any cash, and told the robber she already had activated an alarm. The man left the store and went east toward North Broadway.

Police plan to review security video from the store.

Police were unsuccessful in tracing the suspect’s footprints because of falling snow.

The suspect was described as being in his late teens and had dark hair. He was wearing a gray hoodie and jeans.

March for Life

YOUNGSTOWN — Jim Tsikouris organized a group of 55 Orthodox Christians from Youngstown and Lawrence County in Pennsylvania who are in Washington, D.C., for today’s March for Life.

Today marks the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion without restriction on Jan. 22, 1973.

The local group will participate in activities aimed at garnering support for abortion-reduction legislation.
