In 1905 (New Style calendar), thousands of demonstrating Russian workers are fired on by Imperial army troops in St. Petersburg on what becomes known as “Bloody Sunday.” In 1909, U.N. Secretary-General U Thant is born in Pantanaw, Burma. In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson pleads for an end to war in Europe, calling for “peace without victory.” (By April, however, America also is at war.) There are at least two candidates for Youngstown postmaster to succeed the late John E. Doyle when the Mahoning County Republican Executive Committee meets. They are county Chairman Chester Bailey and Assistant Postmaster Robert E. Gibson.
