YSU reps to explain W.Pa. tuition break

STAFF REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN — Representatives of Youngstown State University will explain the university’s tuition break plan for residents of eight Western Pennsylvania counties Thursday.

The Western Pennsylvania Advantage will be detailed at a news conference at 10:30 a.m. at the Radisson Hotel in West Middlesex, Pa.

The tuition reduction plan will allow students from select Western Pennsylvania counties to attend YSU at the same tuition rate as Ohio students, plus $100.

In-state tuition this year is $6,720.

The university’s trustees approved a plan in December to offer the special tuition rate to students from Mercer, Lawrence, Beaver, Crawford, Butler, Erie, Allegheny and Venango counties beginning this fall.

The action eliminates all but $100 of the $2,692 “nonresident tuition surcharge” imposed by the university.

The university hopes to boost enrollment from the targeted area by 168 full-time students to help make up the potential $1.7 million drop in surcharge fees paid by some 630 students from that area.

Current students from the eight-county region will be given the tuition break as well as any new students.
