Salem police probe tobacco shop robbery

SALEM — Police are investigating an attempted armed robbery of Cheap Tobacco, 200 E. Second St. at 5:57 p.m. Tuesday.

The would-be robber entered the store, put what appeared to be a gun on the counter, and demanded money.

A clerk did not hand over any cash and told the robber she had already activated an alarm. The would-be robber left the store and went east toward North Broadway.

Police plan to review security video from the store. Police were unsuccessful in tracing the suspect’s footprints because of falling snow.

The suspect was described as being in his late teens and had dark hair. He was wearing a gray hoodie and jeans.
