Remembering King’s words

Remembering King’s words

EDITOR:

The slaughter of innocents by Israel in Gaza violates every norm of civilization, as well as every principle stood for by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

In his eulogy for three of the martyred children killed in church by a terrorist bomb in 1963, King said “these children — unoffending, innocent and beautiful — were the victims of one of the most vicious and tragic crimes ever perpetrated against humanity.”

The same condemnation can and should be leveled against Israel’s mass murder through state terrorism of over 300 Palestinian children, many of them intentionally shot to death. As horrific as the Ku Klux Klan bombing was in Alabama back then, Israel’s slaughter of innocents in Gaza today is a hundred times worse. So why the roaring silence and media blackout?

Agreeing with the mayor, even if he’s disagreeable

EDITOR:

I don’t know why the mayor of Girard has to be so negative about everyone who disagrees with him. There are legitimate concerns about the debt the water department already carries. Giving the citizens a say in whether they want to add close to $2 million to it seems reasonable to me.

If my memory serves me correctly, Neptune (meter suppliers and installers) stated at a meeting that these meters would only give a correct reading for about 10 to 15 years. As most of us know, Girard’s water has an effect on our pipes, as it will on the new meters.

Not reading the meters for several years was a bad decision. Allowing water usage to go on to the tune of $650,000 in unpaid bills certainly compounded the problem. Bad decisions created the problem and bad decisions have escalated them.

The mayor stated that these are very rough economic times and not a time to go deeper into debt. That is where he and I agree.

Do we know how many years the sewer surcharge would be in effect, or if other monies would have to be added to the cost, and where that money would come from? Do we know who would maintain these meters and at what cost?

Remembering Meir’s words

EDITOR:

Israel withdrew from all of Gaza more than three years ago in hopes of peace and a two-state solution.

The situation in Israel is dire as neighborhoods of innocent Israelis are being deliberately attacked with rockets as often as dozens of times a day.

Israel has an obligation to defend its citizens from the threat of Iran-backed terrorists now — just as it did when Iran-backed Hezbollah attacked Israel not long ago.

Iran’s president has said he wants to “wipe Israel off the map.” They are developing nuclear materials in defiance of the world, while supporting, training and arming Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah and others.

Israel is no different from any other sovereign nation that must protect their citizens from those who would kill them.

Israel and the Palestinians need a lasting peace — which will only come when the Iran-backed terrorists are defeated.

In the famous words of Golda Meir, “We will have peace with the Arabs when they will love their children more than they hate us.”
