HOWLAND — Howland High won six championships and were runner-up in four other weight classes as the Tigers scored 227 points to capture their fifth straight title at the 48th Howland Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday.

Geneva placed second with 167 points, Girard was third with 123.5 and Eastlake North was fourth with 109.

Kyle Leek, a senior for the Tigers who won the 125-pound title last year, improved his overall record to 21-1 as he captured the 140 championship by pinning Aaron Hall of Girard in 3 minutes, 27 seconds.

Other Tiger championships were won by freshman J.R. Perry, 103; junior Kyle Descenna, 112; senior Ryan Kellerman, 119; senior Andy Cornicelli, 135, and sophomore Robby Klose, 145.

Finishing second for Howland were sophomore Brett Bishop, 125; senior Kai Yancey, 130; senior Mike Zakrajsek, 171, and senior Cody Reesman, 275.

Girard athletes winning titles were Tony Cardiero, 130; Nico Francis, 152, and Tallen Birmingham, 160.

Eastlake North’s Brian Borgione was the 125 pound champ and his teammate, Jacob Glazer, took the 189 crown.

Justin Loll of Cranberry (Pa.) was the 171-pound champ, while Geneva’s Josh Buckey took the 215 title and Ricky Williams the 275 crown.

Dies Memorial

AKRON — Six wrestlers placed among the top six in their respective weight classes to propel West Branch to an impressive second-place team finish at the Bill Dies Tournament on Saturday.

The Warriors finished with 194.5 points, behind team champion Brecksville (225.5)

Jake Mellinger (130) and Brent Stoffer (152) each earned runner-up honors for the Warriors, while Eric Rogel (145) and Eric Bates (171) each finished third. J.P. Hoopes (119) and Matt Uyselt (189) made the podium by placing sixth.

Canfield (112) finished 10th overall on the strength of strong showings by four placers.

Aron Brenner won the individual championship at 152 pounds. Alex Benedict finished third at 112, while Robby Reed (119) took fifth and Cody Hartman (189) finished seventh.

Hubbard (58) finished 25th in the event after placing two wrestlers on the podium. Junior Anthony Nadeja took eighth in the 160-pound bracket. Senior Robbie Lias finished fifth at 215.
