Youngstown: The Martin Luther King Jr. planning committee has announced upcoming events. Co-conveners are Rabbi Joel Berman of Congregation Ohev Tzedek in Boardman and the Rev. Lewis Macklin, pastor of Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, Youngstown. A community service of worship is planned at 3:30 p.m. today at Price Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Methodist Church, 920 Dryden Ave. The Rev. Talmadge Thomas, pastor of City of Zion in Toledo, will be guest speaker. The Rev. Mr. Thomas serves as the religious affairs coordinator for the Toledo Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Nonperishable food items will be accepted for the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., Youngstown, as part of the day of service and compassion.

Austintown: The Life Enrichment Department of Clare Bridge of Austintown hosts a “Dare to Dream” luncheon and program at noon Monday at 1420 S. Canfield-Niles Road. Guest speaker will be Pastor Louis Jackson of Phillips Chapel of Youngstown. Special music will be provided by Harry Clinkscale.

Youngstown: The third annual citywide MLK baby shower will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at McGuffey Center, 1649 Jacobs Road, and sponsored by the Associated Neighborhood Centers. Mothers of newborns to age 5 are invited to obtain information and free samples.

Youngstown: A diversity breakfast, sponsored by the Youngstown State University Office of Student Diversity, is planned at 8 a.m. Thursday in the Chestnut Room in Kilcawley Center. Speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Otis Moss Jr., retired pastor of Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in Cleveland. The cost is $10 for YSU students and $15 for others. Youngstown: The Dr. Martin Luther King annual luncheon is scheduled at 1 p.m. Saturday at VFW Post 6488, 2065 Coitsville-Hubbard Road. Speaker will be the Rev. Lewis Macklin of Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, Youngstown. U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, also will speak briefly. The event is free and open to the public.

TRUMBULL COUNTY

Warren: The Rev. Dr. John F. Newby Jr., pastor of Grace African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1137 Main Ave. S.W., will speak at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast program at 7:30 a.m. Monday in the Warren G. Harding High School cafeteria. The Rev. Dr. Newby served as pastor of churches in Findlay, Toledo and Lorain before coming to Warren. He is an associate professor emeritus at Bowling Green State University, where he was on the faculty and administrative staff for 25 years. Cost of the breakfast is $15 per person or tables of 10 for $125.

MERCER COUNTY

Sharon: Penn State Shenango will be closed Monday, but the campus will have its annual Martin Luther King Day celebration featuring storyteller, author and poet Shindana Cooper at noon Wednesday in the Forum of Forker Laboratory, 147 Shenango Ave. Her presentation, titled “Martin’s Story,” focuses on the boyhood dreams of young King. The event is free and open to the public.

Greenville: Thiel College is presenting Dr. Eric Abercrumbie, director of ethnic programs and services at the African-American Culture and Research Center at the University of Cincinnati, at 9 a.m. Thursday in the Lutheran Heritage Room of the Howard Miller Student Center.

His presentation, “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day: A Day On, Not a Day Off,” will focus on King, his impact on American culture and the importance of diversity in our society. The event is free and open to the public. Abercrumbie is originator of the Black Man Think Tank and serves as a racial/human relations consultant to corporations, community groups and educational systems.

Grove City: Grove City College will host Timothy Russell, president of the Memphis Center for Urban Theological Studies, at 7 p.m. Monday in Harbison Chapel, as the campus marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Russell’s topic will be “Jesus, Plain and Simple — ‘Love Your Enemies.’” The event is free and open to the public.
