NILES — The Mahoning Valley McKinley Club, a nonprofit, tricounty organization, announces that John Kasich, an Ohio native and Fox News contributor, is donating his time to be keynote speaker at the 94th annual banquet honoring President William B. McKinley.

The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 30 at the McKinley Memorial in Niles.

Kasich was named as one of Newsweek magazine’s “100 People for the 21st Century.” He is the author of the New York Times best seller “Courage is Contagious.”

President McKinley was born in Niles on Jan. 29, 1843. His family moved to Poland in 1852, where McKinley attended the Poland Union Seminary School. He and his family were active in Mahoning County community affairs.

Before enlisting in the Union Army at the outbreak of the Civil War, McKinley taught at the Kerr School in Poland. When McKinley was governor of Ohio (1891-1895), he proposed laws to protect railroad workers and address the issue of child labor, important concerns for Valley residents.
