Documentary featured at San Diego festival
A documentary film titled “631” by Youngstown native Derrick A. Jones will be featured at the San Diego Black Film Festival from Jan. 29 through Feb. 1. “631” follows the history of Jones’ family on Ridge Avenue on the Youngstown’s South Side.
Jones was a 2008 recipient of the Princess Grace Foundation Award. He is in the completion stage of his documentary about the Lucasville state penitentiary riot, which is slated to be aired on PBS. The Ohio University film major is working on his third degree. The son of Dennis G. and Joyce A. Jones, he will begin a two-week internship at the Cannes Film Festival in France in May.
Championship Wrestling returns to the Wedge
AUSTINTOWN — Championship Wrestling Experience will present “Two Years Later,” a wrestling show, at 7 p.m. Friday at the Wedge nightclub, 1743 S. Raccoon Road. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available in advance for $10 at Havana House in Niles and at the Wedge box office. Tickets will also be available at the door for $12.
Hoyt offers classes for adults, children
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts, 124 E. Leasure Ave., has began its winter semester this week, but there is still time to enroll in a number of classes and workshops through February.
Classes available the latter part of this month include: “Me and My Masterpiece” and “Puppets and Performance.” Both are for children.
One-day workshops include: “The Art of Fashion for Teens,” “Pastels,” “Trompe L’oeil Topiary,” “Shiny Happy Things” and “Digital Bookmaking.”
Children’s classes available in February include: “The Crown Jewels with a Spot of Tea,” “Draw in Ink and Watercolor Wash” and “Wrap It Up In 3-D.” Adult classes include: “The Native Landscape,” “Alternative Photography — Cyanotypes,” “Drawing Rekindled” and “Paint Yourself Out of a Corner.” February’s one-day workshops include: “Wine and Food — A Perfect Pair,” “Mosaic Objects,” “Handwriting Analysis” and “Writing.”

Art at Mount Union
ALLIANCE — Mount Union College is featuring work by Matthew Tullis through Jan. 30 in the Crandall Art Gallery. An artist’s gallery talk will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 29.
Tullis earned a master of fine arts degree from Tyler School of Art of Temple University and a bachelor of fine arts from Oregon State University. He is an associate professor at Western Kentucky University.
Crandall Gallery, which is at the corner of Simpson Street and Union Avenue, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m.
