Supporters of Beaver school levy seek help to get the word out

The superintendent said some residents didn’t realize it was a renewal levy.

STAFF REPORT

LISBON — Supporters of a Beaver School District renewal tax levy on the Feb. 3 ballot are looking for some help.

The levy was originally approved by voters in 1994, but growth in the community has resulted in the renewal’s being set at just 5.3 mills. That’s the amount of taxes now needed to generate the same level of revenue — $1.2 million — received in 1994.

Voters refused to renew the operating levy in November, rejecting it by a vote of 3,398 to 3,100. It will be back on the ballot next month.

Although the district put out information explaining the levy was a renewal and wouldn’t generate any new taxes on residents, some people apparently didn’t realize in November it was a renewal issue, DiBacco said in a prepared statement.

State law prohibits school districts from using school funds to support a levy or bond issue.

The Beavers Educating Students for Tomorrow, the committee created to support the renewal effort, is low on funds, DiBacco said, explaining that prevented the group from printing informational fliers, putting out advertisements and erecting new signs for the November campaign.

Anyone interested in supporting the February campaign, either with a yard sign or some other contribution, should contact the school administrative office at (330) 385-6831, DiBacco said.

Financial donations in the form of checks should be made out to B.E.S.T. and mailed to the district office at 13093 state Route 7, Lisbon, OH 44432.
