State releases $800,000 for work at KSU campuses

SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR

COLUMBUS — The state Controlling Board released nearly $800,000 for building repairs and renovations at Kent State University campuses in three counties.

The largest of the six agenda items was for $424,855 for replacement of an air-handling unit at the main building on KSU’s Canton campus.

The project included the removal of the existing system and the installation of new units, controls, duct work and other components, according to documents.

The board also released $171,771.08 for emergency repairs to the library at the Kent campus, prompted in part after an incident in August 2007 when a 40-pound section of stone cracked and fell off the building.

According to documents, “Due to age and weathering the limestone accents along the overhanging third floor have begun to crack and fall, creating a serious safety issue for pedestrians and maintenance workers.”

Other KSU funds released Monday by the Controlling Board included:

U$145,152 for a fire alarm upgrade at KSU’s Salem campus. The project involves a building purchased by the university from the Salem Board of Education and includes the installation of a fire alarm system, emergency exit lighting and exit signs, according to documents.

U$21,500 for a roof replacement at Satterfield Hall in Kent. The project involves the removal and replacement of the roof membrane and additional repair and improvements to the parapets and exterior masonry.

U$20,000 for a water chiller project at the Kent campus, related to the expansion of Taylor Hall and the gymnasium annex.
