Columbiana, Carrollton counties get federal money for demolitions

SALEM — Officials in Columbiana and Carroll counties will receive $1.5 million in federal money that likely will be used to tear down old homes.

Salem Mayor Jerry Wolford said Tuesday, “It’s a unique opportunity to clear up blighted properties” in the city.

The federal funds come from the Housing and Recovery Act of 2008. The funds will be passed through to the Ohio Neighborhood Stabilization Program.

The money, according to Marshall Bleckman of Bleckman & Associates of North Canton, has to be spent within 18 months.
