Armed man steals drugs
YOUNGSTOWN — A Lora Avenue woman told police that a masked man with a gun crashed through her front picture window and demanded all her pills. The woman gave him a variety of pills, including painkillers OxyContin and oxycodone, as well as her purse with $1,000 in it, reports show. Because the man specifically asked for the pills when he entered the North Side house early Sunday, the woman believes she knows his identity. Police found footprints in the snow leading up to the front window and glass on the living room floor.
School left with no heat
YOUNGSTOWN — A sensor in the East High School heating system malfunctioned around 2 p.m. Monday, shutting off heat to the building. School officials said heat was restored before 4 p.m. and no one had to be sent home early, but a girls basketball game against Boardman High School had to be canceled. The building will be open for classes today.
3 OK after ice accident
YOUNGSTOWN — Two teenage boys and a man who slipped through the ice at Lake Newport in Mill Creek Park over the weekend did not require medical treatment, said park Police Chief Nathan Pinkard. A boy who had been pushing snow into the lake near the dam slipped into the water around 2:50 p.m. Sunday, followed by his friend, the chief said. A man who had been with the boys entered the lake to help them and also fell through the ice. A passer-by called park police and then he and the mother of one of the boys used jumper cables to get everyone to safety.
