Iowa defends title

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Iowa’s Brent Metcalf beat D.J. Meagher 18-6 at 149 pounds for his 51st straight win, and the top-ranked Hawkeyes topped Cornell 23-13 on Sunday for their second straight NWCA National Duals title.

Metcalf, 19-0 this season, had a pin, two technical falls a one major decision in the tournament.

The Hawkeyes, who beat Nebraska for last year’s title and downed the Huskers 22-11 to reach this year’s championship match, improved to 14-0 in duals this season. They have won 28 straight matches.

Cornell, the tournament’s third seed, beat Iowa State 22-15 to reach the final.

Iowa State edged Nebraska 20-19 for third place, Ohio State downed Minnesota 25-12 for fifth, and Boise State beat Penn State 22-15 for seventh.

Marshua’s Stakes

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. — Longshot Waquoit’s Love, who had not won in a year and a day, broke her eight-race losing streak, winning the $100,000 Marshua’s River Stakes by a neck over Sea Chanter at Gulfstream Park on Sunday.

Ridden by Rene Douglas, Waquoit’s Love ran 1 1-16 miles on the turf in 1:41.18 and paid $19.00, $8.20 and $4.60. Sea Chanter, a 17-1 shot, paid $15.00 and $6.20. Even-money Ginger Brew paid $2.60 to show.

Douglas got the mount when scheduled jockey Elvis Trujillo fell in the third race. His injuries were not serious.

Winter Dew Tour

WEST DOVER, Vt. — Olympic gold medalist Shaun White won the men’s superpipe final and hometown hero and fellow gold medalist Kelly Clark topped the women’s field Sunday in the second stop of the inaugural Winter Dew Tour.

White’s winning run included a backside rodeo 720, a backside 900, back-to-back 1080s into a 720. He finished with an alley-oop rodeo and scored 96.25.

“The first run was really good but I knew I could go a little bigger than I did in that first run,” said White, from Carlsbad, Calif. “It was a weird run. My glove was kind of iced over and we had to add these marks to my board so I’d make sure I grabbed it. I went through that second run there and it just all fell together.”

Steve Fisher of Breckenridge, Colo., was second at 92.75, and Kevin Pearce of Norwich was third at 90.00.

Lumber bowling event

RENO, Nev. — Patrick Allen won the Lumber Liquidators PBA National Bowling Stadium Championship on Sunday, beating Walter Ray Williams Jr. 225-223 when Williams left a pocket 8-10 split on his second shot in the 10th frame.

“After Walter Ray labeled the first one in the 10th, I was just praying for a rolloff,” said Allen, from Wesley Chapel, Fla. “He is the all-time titles leader because he performs when he needs to. The second shot looked good off his hand. Having that happen to win is something you can’t even imagine.”

The 38-year-old left-hander earned $25,000 for his 11th career title, and locked up an exemption for the 2009-2010 season. Williams, a 45-time winner, made $13,000.
