YOUNGSTOWN — One Youngstown resident received an early birthday gift a bit larger than usual.

Michele Pollock, 56, who will celebrate her birthday at the end of January, was one of two in Ohio to claim a winning ticket for the top prize in the Ohio Lottery New Year’s Raffle game.

Pollock, who lives on the West Side of Youngstown, purchased her $1 million ticket at Dhillon Sun Merchant, 3605 Mahoning Ave. It was claimed in the Ohio Lottery’s Youngstown regional office. After taxes, totalling 31 percent, she will take home a lump sum check for $690,000.

Raul Vega Sotomayor, of Oxford, in the Cincinnati area, was the other winner.

Baby shower planned

YOUNGSTOWN — The annual citywide baby shower at the McGuffey Center, 1649 Jacobs Road, will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 19 at 1649 Jacobs Road. Expectant and new mothers of children up to age 5 are invited to participate in the event, which will include lunch, games, prizes and other giveaways.

There will also be a licensed pediatrician available to answer questions and present health information for both mothers and their babies.

Area agencies and organizations can reserve a vendor table for the event by calling (330) 744-4377. Those wishing to attend must register by Thursday by calling the same number.

Boil-water alert issued

MINERAL RIDGE — Due to a waterline break, residents of Seaborn and Union streets are advised to boil water for cooking or drinking until further notice. This boil advisory means bringing the water to a rapid boil for at least 3-4 minutes.

Long-term care seminar

NILES — Shepherd of the Valley, 1500 McKinley Ave., is presenting a seminar on long- term care insurance. The seminar will explain what long-term care insurance is, what it covers and how to choose a policy that is right for you.

Fire chief interviews

NEW SPRINGFIELD — Springfield Township trustees will interview five applicants for the part-time fire chief’s position when they meet in special session at 10 a.m. today. On the list to be interviewed are: Interim Fire Chief Matt Gebhardt, Assistant Fire Chief Scott Rice, EMS Squad Second Lieutenant Jim Bacon, paramedic and firefighter Tom Mason and First Captain Dan Bender. The trustees are expected to convene and then go into executive session for the interviews.

The township has been operating with Gebhardt, a former first captain, as interim fire chief since the resignation of full-time Chief Brian Hughes in February. Hughes resigned after his position was made part-time after his return to work from a suspension.

The suspension was imposed after he was found guilty of several misdemeanor charges in a 2005 training exercise at a Garfield Road barn fire.

Feed the Children

YOUNGSTOWN — The Salvation Army, 1501 Glenwood Ave., will take Feed the Children applications from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.For information, call (330) 746-8403.

To apply, applicants must have a valid photo identification, Social Security cards for all members of the household, proof of guardianship of children (either medical cards, insurance cards, court papers or birth certificates) and agree to sign an income verification form stating that household income is 200 percent of the poverty level or less for the household size. A recent printout from Job and Family Services may be used for SS numbers and proof of guardianship. Recipients will receive a box of food along with personal items. Distribution will be from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 20 at the Chevrolet Centre, 229 E. Front St.
