It's not over yet....

The storm has postponed a number of tonight’s sporting events.

Staff/WIRE REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN — A winter storm warning is in effect until 1 a.m. Sunday for Columbiana and Trumbull counties and areas north of there, but the warning has been downgraded to a winter weather advisory for Mahoning County until 11 p.m. Freezing drizzle and a chance of sleet is predicted for both counties this evening.

The National Weather Service issues a warning when severe winter weather is expected and heavy snow and/or ice will cause hazardous driving conditions.

Anyone traveling in the warning area is advised to choose an alternate route if possible or use extreme caution if travel is unavoidable.

Lt. William Centric of the Youngstown Police Department said traffic hasn’t been too big of a problem for the city, despite the bad weather.

“We’re not getting many accidents because there aren’t a lot of people on the road,” he said. “They’re showing good sense.”

He added that the department has been able to handle business as usual.

“So far, we’ve been able to keep up with things,” he said. “It’s pretty much nothing out of the ordinary for this type of weather.”

There is a 40 percent chance of snow Sunday afternoon, with a 30 percent chance at night, according to the National Weather Service Web site. The forecast for the remainder of the week calls for continued snowfall.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, the snowiest month on record for Youngstown was January 1999, with an accumulation of 34.6 inches. The record for most snow falling in one year occurred between 2007 and 2008 with 102.8 inches.

This latest storm dumped more snow and freezing rain across most of the state today, grounding flights out of the region, causing vehicles to spin out of control on slick roads and canceling many of tonight’s sporting events as the National Weather Service forecast total accumulations of up to 10 inches in some places and icy travel conditions.

A list of events postponed for Mahoning Valley teams follows this story.

In Sandusky Bay, a freighter heading to the coal docks became trapped and had to wait for a U.S. Coast Guard cutter to clear a path through the ice.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport beefed up its snow-clearing crews to keep pace with the snow. More than half of the airport’s Saturday morning flights were canceled or delayed.

Officials in Cleveland, Akron and Toledo and many Mahoning Valley communities imposed parking restrictions to clear paths for plows.

Snow buildup forced drivers to a crawl to avoid fishtailing on slick side streets in Youngstown and Warren.

Two tractor trailers jacknifed in northwest Ohio’s Seneca County, which was under a Level 2 snow emergency. No one was injured in the crashes.

Snowy roads contributed to a Friday afternoon bus crash there that left eight people with minor injuries. A school bus driver was cited for failing to keep control of the vehicle when the bus ran off a snow-covered road and struck trees.

Less severe Level 1 snow emergencies were issued for nearby Fulton, Henry, Lucas and Wood counties.

In Lucas County, two cars and a tractor trailer lost control on Interstate 75 early Saturday. No major injuries or accidents were reported, despite a steady snowfall adding to the seven inches of snow already covering the ground.

The Ohio Department of Transportation instituted 12-hour shifts for road crews, said spokeswoman Theresa Pollick.

“Now it becomes a plow and salt game,” Pollick said. “It’s basically keeping up with the precipitation.”
