3 charged after fleeing cops

YOUNGSTOWN — Two men who fled a traffic stop in a stolen car and ran into a house on Cain Street on the South Side were arrested and a gun was confiscated, police said.

The driver, Lorenzo Hilton, 19, of Winona Avenue was charged with receiving stolen property, driving without a license and failure to signal a turn. His passenger, Edward Mickel, 21, of South Glenellen Avenue, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and having a weapon while under disability, based on a previous conviction.

David Williams, the resident of the house they ran into Friday evening, was wanted on several warrants and taken into custody, reports show.

Patrolman P.J. Chance tried to stop the 1997 Chevrolet on Hylda Avenue, but it continued into the driveway of a house in the 2700 block of Cain, and the occupants jumped out and ran inside. More officers arrived to set up a perimeter.

Patrolman Morris Lee saw Hilton and Mickel open the back door and then heard Hilton say that he didn’t steal the car, that he rented it for $20 from “Mr. Wagner.” Police said the car had been taken in an aggravated robbery Jan. 2.

Williams, Hilton’s uncle, gave police permission to search the house. A loaded handgun was found in the doorway of the first floor bathroom, police said.

Mickel told police the gun was his “for protection.”

Mickel, Hilton and Williams were taken to the county jail. They are expected to be arraigned Monday in municipal court.
