BOARDMAN — The men and women of the township police department were recognized recently for their commitment to accident-free driving, and their record low insurance claim loss during the past year, by receiving 2008 Safe Driving Awards.
Lt. Vincent DeLuco was singled out for recognition for his 31 years of accident-free driving while patrolling the streets. In addition to receiving his 2008 Safe Driver Award, DeLuco will be recognized by the township trustees for his accomplishment at a future meeting.
“Thirty-one years without an accident is an incredible record,” said Chief Patrick J. Berarducci. “Lt. DeLuco is the consummate professional in everything that he does. He’s a great example for the younger officers to follow, and it was a special pleasure to recognize him. When Vinnie retires at the end of this month, he will be greatly missed.”
Two officers had one on-duty accident each with the total claims of $1,531.74 being paid by the township’s insurance carrier for all of 2008.
Forty-seven other officers including the chief received the award along with 15 support personnel. Support personnel, most of which do not drive a vehicle on township business, were honored because of their personal driving records. By avoiding accidents and injuries — and the resulting missed work days — they have helped reduce the department’s operating costs.
