Sen. Cafaro leads Dems
COLUMBUS — The Ohio Senate Democrats unanimously elected state Sen. Capri Cafaro of Liberty as their leader.
The official vote of the 12 Democratic senators in the 33-member body occurred Monday at the beginning of this year’s legislative session. Cafaro has served the Senate’s 32nd district since January 2007. She was appointed to replace Marc Dann when he became state attorney general.
2 charged in burglary
BOARDMAN — Police arrested two men on charges related to a burglary last week of a Woodrow Avenue home.
Michael D. Smith, 28, of Bank Street, Cortland, was arrested Monday on warrants charging him with aggravated burglary and resisting arrest. Matthew Miller, 21, of South Raccoon Road, Austintown, was arrested Monday on a warrant charging him with aggravated burglary. Both were in the Mahoning County Jail.
On Dec. 30, two residents of Woodrow told police that five men forced their way into the home looking for their roommate. When the residents told the men they didn’t know who the roommate was, the men began to hit them. After a few minutes, the men left the home in a maroon Ford. Police apprehended another man, Randy Colello, 23, of Leah Avenue, that night. Colello was charged with obstructing official business, resisting arrest and complicity to aggravated burglary.
Poverty to be topic
YOUNGSTOWN — Bishop George Murray of the Diocese of Youngstown will speak at 7:15 p.m. Jan. 16 on “Poverty Locally and Beyond” during a program in recognition of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The North Side Interfaith Partnership will sponsor the event at Congregation Rodef Sholom, 1119 Elm St. Other participants are First Unitarian Universalist Church, Richard Brown United Methodist Church, Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Tabernacle Baptist Church, St. Columba Cathedral, St. Edward Church and Beatitude House.
There will be an ecumenical service at 5:30 and potluck dinner at 6. Those attending are asked to take a main dish, salad, vegetable or dessert to share, about enough to feed 12 people. Avoid foods with pork or shellfish. Participants also should make reservations by Monday with their respective organizations.
