History at a glance

1927: The Youngstown Players is formed as a result of the merging of several local theater groups. Early productions were held in a renovated barn building on Lincoln Avenue, with an entrance on Arlington Avenue.

1942: The group moves into a renovated movie theater on Market Street.

1959: The Youngstown Players moves into its current building off Glenwood Avenue.

1998: The building receives a $1 million-plus renovation. The arena theater is eliminated as a result, but office space and a storage building are added.

2004: The Playhouse undergoes a financial crisis. The board is replaced; former managing director Bentley Lenhoff returns to guide the theater.

2005: John Holt replaces Lenhoff as managing director.

2009: Board of directors announces it will leave the building.
