Tour of duty in Iraq

VIENNA — Twenty members of the 910th Security Forces Squadron were to return to the Youngstown Air Reserve Station at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday after a six-month tour of duty in Iraq.

The reservists performed security-related duties at Kirkuk Air Base. They originally were scheduled to arrive at 3 p.m.

Teen dies in car crash

UNION, Pa. — A New Castle, Pa., man died after the car in which he was a passenger lost control and struck a tree in Union Township.

Delmonte L. Searcy, 18, of New Castle, was pronounced dead by the Lawrence County coroner after he was discovered by authorities in a car driven by Abron C. Phillips, 19, of Farrell, Pa.

According to a police report, Phillips was traveling west on Rebecca Street on Friday when he lost control of the vehicle and hit its passenger side into a tree.

Searcy was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Phillips was flown from the scene to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. Information on his condition was not released.

Authorities are investigating the accident.

Author at library event

AUSTINTOWN — Author Bruno Yeropoli will speak during a session of the Austintown Friends of the Library, which has been moved to next Monday.

A local author, Yeropoli will talk about his first novel, “Vengeance from the Grave,” at 10 a.m. in the community room at 600 S. Racoon Road. The event is open to the public at no cost.

The Friends engagement was pushed back due to routine closing the third Monday of the month.

Art sale at Eastwood

NILES — Works from more than 100 artists as well as musical performances will mark the closing reception at the Art Outreach Gallery in Eastwood Mall on Sunday.

Located across from the American Eagle Outfitters within the mall complex, Art Outreach will feature painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking and graphic design from area artists and several public school students.

All of the art is for sale, and all proceeds will be given to the artists.

The exhibition is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. at the mall, 5555 Youngstown Warren Road.

Scholarships for diabetics

STRUTHERS — In its 13th year, the Thomas J. Seefred Trust will select college students with juvenile diabetes to receive a scholarship of up to $3,000.

Students in an accredited junior college, college or university in the Mahoning Valley, age 18 to 25, may apply for a scholarship at www.seefredtrust.org. Applicants will be awarded based on their academic promise, personal statement, recommendations and financial need.

Printed applications must be postmarked by April 1, and winners will be notified after July 1.
