March for Gaza
YOUNGSTOWN — The Coalition for Peace in the Middle East will conduct a march from Youngstown to Warren today to protest the Israeli military offensive in Gaza. The march will begin at noon at the Thomas D. Lambros Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, 125 Market St., Youngstown, and end at U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan’s office, 197 W. Market St., Warren. En route, along U.S. Route 422, some 450 black ribbons representing those killed in Gaza during the past seven days will be placed on utility poles.
Reservists returning
VIENNA — Twenty members of the 910th Security Forces Squadron will return to the Youngstown Air Reserve Station about 3:30 p.m. today after a six-month tour of duty in Iraq. The reservists performed security-related duties at Kirkuk Air Base in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
School board meeting
LISBON — The Beaver Local Board of Education will meet in special session at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Beaver Local Administration Building, 13093 State Route 7. The purpose will be to go into executive session to interview board member candidates and to discuss other matters that may come before the board.
Blood drive scheduled as Eagle Scout project
HARTFORD — John Hane, a member of Boy Scout Troop 90 in Hartford, has organized a Red Cross Blood Drive as an Eagle Scout project.
Donors will be welcomed from 3 to 7 p.m. Jan. 19 at Hartford United Methodist Church, 6846 Hartford Road SE. A special canteen will be available for those donating blood during the event.
Junior Women plan to serve others
BOARDMAN — Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League has scheduled its first meeting of 2009 for 7 p.m. Monday at Glenellen Assisted Living. Members are asked to take household items to be donated to Children Services and the Group Home. Plans will be made to serve food to the needy Jan. 25 at St. John’s Soup Kitchen.
Assuming their duties as league officers for 2009 will be: Yvonne Ford, president; Denise Statler, president elect; Marie Fryda and Nina Lowery, vice presidents; Paige Schantz, second vice president; Paula Geidner, treasurer; Margaret Cherol, assistant treasurer; Linda Crish, recording secretary; and Lynn Mickey, corresponding secretary.
Installed as new members during a candlelight ceremony that took place in December were Sue Filipovich, Nancy Smith, Chantal McCafferty and Sue Calhoun.
The Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women over 18 who reside in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties and who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement.
