Cleveland St. 53, Detroit 44

DETROIT — J’Nathan Bullock scored 12 points and Cleveland State held on for a win over Detroit. Trey Harmon added 10 for the Vikings (11-5, 2-2 Horizon League), who won their fourth straight. Woody Payne and Nemanja Jokic each had 10 for Detroit (4-9, 0-4). Down 10, the Titans went on an eight-point run capped by Michael Harrington’s layup to pull to within 42-40 with 5:14 remaining. But Harmon countered 34 seconds later with a 3-pointer. Cleveland State led 34-20 at halftime. The Vikings scored the final six points of the half on Chris Moore’s free throw with 1:50 left, Cedric Jackson’s layup with 1:28 remaining and Jackson’s 3-pointer with 35 seconds left.

Wis.-Milwaukee 80, Loyola of Chicago 66

CHICAGO — Avery Smith had 28 points and Tone Boyle added 19 as Wisconsin-Milwaukee defeated Loyola of Chicago to remain undefeated in league competition. The Panthers never trailed, leading by as many as 20 points late in the game. They used 3-point shooting, hitting 13 of 24 tries from beyond the arc to build their margin. Wisconsin-Milwaukee (8-5, 4-0) finished with 52 percent shooting, hitting 29 of 56 attempts. J.R. Blount led Loyola (8-6, 0-2) with 19 points, while Leon Young came off the bench to add 13 and Justin Cerasoli added 11. The Panthers never took a free throw in the first half. Loyola shot only two free throws before intermission, hitting both of them, and added nine in the second half. Young also led Loyola with six rebounds, a figure matched by both Tony Meier and Anthony Hill for the Panthers.

Butler 75, Valparaiso 62

VALPARAISO, Ind. — Matt Howard scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and Willie Veasley had a career-high 15 points to lead No. 25 Butler to victory over Valparaiso. Butler (12-1, 3-0 Horizon League), sparked by a three-point play by Howard, a pair of 3-pointers by Gordon Hayward 59 seconds apart and another basket inside by Howard, opened the second half with an 13-2 run to move ahead 44-33. The Bulldogs extended the lead to 52-37 when Shawn Vanzant hit a 15-foot jumper. The Crusaders (4-10, 1-2) cut the lead to 59-53 when Jake Diebler hit a pair of free throws with 5:04 left. But Shelvin Mack, who scored 14, answered with a 3 to give Butler a nine-point lead again and the Crusaders never made another run. Brandon McPherson led Valparaiso with 22 points and Urule Igbavboa added 17. Hayward had 15 for Butler.

Wis.-Green Bay 66, Ill.-Chicago 61.

CHICAGO — Terry Evans had 28 points and eight rebounds to lead Wisconsin-Green Bay to victory over Illinois-Chicago. The score was tied after the first period at 28, but Wisconsin-Green Bay (10-4, 3-0) came back after half time to outscore Illinois-Chicago (8-5, 1-2) by five points in the second period and seal the win. The victory leaves Wisconsin-Greey Bay undefeated in the Horizon League. Troy Cotton added 18 points, including four 3-pointers, for the Phoenix. Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Randy Berry fouled out. Josh Mayo led Illinois-Chicago with 22 points and Scott Vandermeer added nine points. The Flames saw their shooting percentage drop from 41.7 percent in the first period to 28.6 percent in the second period. Illinois-Chicago earned 20 points from its bench players.
