WARREN — Area residents interested in pursuing a career in health care may attend a free Health Care Career Workshop, presented by Northeast Ohio HealthForce, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Warren YWCA, 385 North Park Ave. Participants will be able to talk to health care employers, educators and career pathway representatives and receive financial aid information. Lose weight, stop smoking

GREENVILLE, Pa. — The UPMC Horizon Wellness Center, 26 Conneaut Lake Road, is offering smoking cessation and weight lot classes. The five-session smoking cessation class is from Jan. 19 to Feb. 16 from noon to 1 p.m. The cost is $27. Participants must register by Jan. 15.

The 12-week “Lifestyle Balance Program,” aimed at losing weight without dieting, is offered beginning Jan. 21 with a choice of two sessions: Noon to 1 p.m. and from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The fee is $50. Seasonal disorder

AUSTINTOWN — The First Ohio Chapter of the Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health presents “Seasonal Affective Disorder” at its Jan. 14 meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. at D&E Clinic, 142 Javit Court. The speaker is Cathy Grisinski, assistant director of Help Hotline Crisis Center.

Volunteers sought

Sharon Regional honored

SHARON, Pa. — Sharon Regional Health System has received the American College of Cardiology Foundation’s NCDR ACTION Registry-GWTG Silver Performance Achievement Award for 2008, one of 93 hospitals nationwide so designated. The award signifies that Sharon Regional has reached an aggressive goal of treating coronary artery disease patients with 85 percent compliance to core standard levels of care outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations. To receive the ACTION Registry-GWTG Silver Performance Achievement Award, Sharon Regional consistently followed the treatment guidelines in ACTION Registry-GWTG for 12 consecutive months. These include aggressive use of medications like cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, and anticoagulants in the hospital.

Well-child clinic

GIRARD — The well-child immunization clinic will be conducted Jan. 14 at 11 a.m., in the Girard Health Department located in the City Building at 100 W. Main St. The Clinic is offered free of charge to Girard City children. Parents are reminded to bring a copy of the child’s immunization record. A parent or guardian must accompany children under the age eighteen. Parents must pre-register their child prior to the clinic. Call between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at (330) 545 – 6048.

Weight control for kids

BOARDMAN — Humility of Mary Health Partners is offering a pediatric weight management program, “Way to Go Kids!”, which teaches overweight kids, ages 8-12, the skills needed to develop healthy lifestyle habits. A parent and/or guardian must accompany the child through the program, which is conducted at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, 8401 Market St. Two sessions of six classes, which include nutrition sessions followed by a fitness sessions, are available: The first session is on Mondays Jan. 12-Feb. 15; the second is on Wednesdays from Feb. 25-April 1. Both sessions are from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

The program requires the child’s participation in two or more other youth activity classes at the D.D. and Velma Davis YMCA, 45 McClurg Road, each week for six weeks, from 5-6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
