Protect your yard
Frosty nights and mornings are upon us. Here are tips to protect your yard.
Cover tender plants. Sheets, blankets, burlap and leaves will protect plants from a mild frost. Use sticks or stakes to support a tent over the plant. For small plants, use milk jugs, newspaper or cardboard. Remove the covers in the morning after the frost has thawed. Don’t let plastic touch the leaves because it can transfer cold and burn them. Never leave plants covered with plastic when it’s sunny, as that can cook the plants. For tender plants too large to cover, wrap the trunks with blankets.
Move potted plants to a protected spot. Rocks, concrete walls and sidewalks collect heat during the day, and at night that can protect plants. Fences and walls protect against harsh winds.
Don’t prune freeze-damaged limbs until spring. They offer some protection for the rest of the plant.
