Westminster 63, Washington & Jefferson 54
WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Titans (2-11, 2-1 Presidents’ Athletic Conference) used a 15-0 run in the second half to humble W&J (7-5, 0-2), the conference’s preseason No. 2. Westminster, which had lost 11 of 12, was led by senior guard Bobby Glass (Neshanock), who scored a career-high 17 points. Junior forward Ryne Murray and sophomore guard Max Spinner added 14 and 13 points, respectively. The Titans shot 34.8 percent (8-for-23) from 3-point range. Overall, Westminster shot 45.8 percent (22-for-48) from the floor compared to W&J at 36.8 percent. Albert Varacallo and Josip Lucic-Jozak led the Presidents with 14 and 12 points apiece. After W&J took a one-point lead (47-46) with 8:57 left in the second half, Westminster held the Presidents scoreless of the next seven minutes to take a 13-point lead with two minutes left.
Bethany 77, Thiel 70
BETHANY, W.Va. — Bethany (6-5, 2-1) outscored Thiel 10-2 over the final three minutes to come away with the victory in a game that featured 23 lead changes and 10 ties. Joe Testa led the way for Bethany with 16 points and 12 rebounds, his third double-double of the year and seventh of his career. The Tomcats had three reach double figures, led by Nick Sefcsik with 17.
John Carroll 94, Mount Union 88 OT
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — John Carroll scored 10 of the final 14 points in regulation, then earned the win in overtime in an Ohio Athletic Conference game. Chris Switzer matched his career-high with a game-high 30 points, Jay Mathis had 15 points while Luke Conley and Dave Pellerite each had 13 points to lead the Purple Raiders (9-2, 3-2), who dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season. Rudy Kirbus scored six of his team-high 22 points in overtime to lead four Blue Streaks (7-4, 3-2) in double figures.
Hiram 85, Earlham 70
HIRAM — Andrew Wiegand scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Hiram (8-4, 3-0), which won its third straight North Coast Athletic Conference game. Ian Pfouts added 14 points while junior forward Jason Hebeisen and sophomore forward Babajide Eniola each added 12 points. Tristian Gregory scored a game-high 22 points on 7-of-17 shooting for Earlham (1-10, 1-2). Justin Barger added 17 points and Ryan Taylor had 12. After Earlham cut its deficit to six points, 46-40, at the 15:12 mark, the Terriers took control and led by as many as 20 points late in the second half.
WOMEN
Thiel 82, Bethany 76
BETHANY, W.Va. — Mooney High graduate Amber Bodrick scored 16 points to go with six rebounds and there steals to lead Thiel (6-4, 2-2), which held Bethany 29 percent shooting from the field. Towanda-Michelle Warren added 20 points.
Washington & Jefferson 79, Westminster 49
WASHINGTON, Pa. — Senior guard Gina Brunetti (Cardinal Mooney) scored 11 points to lead the Titans (3-7, 0-3 Presidents’ Athletic Conference), while junior guard Amy Dolsak (McDonald) had 10 points, Katherine Khattab had nine and Lynn Riley had nine rebounds, six points and five assists. Three Washington & Jefferson players scored in double figures led by Maggie Gibson’s game-high 20 points. Stephanie Smith bucketed 12 points and Emily Hays scored 11 to go with a team-high seven rebounds. Westminster committed 21 turnovers compared to W&J’s 10.
Hiram 70, Earlham 58
HIRAM — Freshman guard Tiffany Shields scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Hiram (3-7, 2-2), which snapped a five-game losing streak. Kelsey Durichko added 12 points and five assists, Jess Cowan had 11 points and Caitlyn Ruese had nine rebounds and eight points for the Terriers. Earlham had three players in double figures led by Tasha Merrill with a game-high 14 points.
Chatham 53, Grove City 49
GROVE CITY, Pa. — Junior forward Laura Miller led Grove City (3-7, 1-2) with 12 points while sophomore guard Jenna Johnston recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Raeann Szelong added 10 points and a game-high three assists. Grove City owned a 23-14 advantage at halftime and led by as many as 10 in the second half. However, the Wolverines shot just 24 percent from the field in the second half and Chatham (7-3, 1-2) closed the game with an 8-0 run. Brittany Brown led Chatham with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Barb Petty added 11 points. Chatham committed 19 turnovers while Grove City turned the ball over 17 times.
California (Pa.) 80, West Chester 59
WEST CHESTER, Pa. — Behind a season-high 27 points from sophomore forward Kayla Smith and a double-double from junior guard Brooque, California (7-2) rolled past West Chester (7-3). Senior guard Lindsay Johnson (Springfield) posted seven points and four rebounds for the Vulcans, who outscored West Chester 15-3 over the last seven minutes of the first half to take a 36-19 halftime lead.
